PhD registration and defense Choosing your supervisors and examination committee members

You need two supervisors:

1. Faculty Supervisor (FGA): Must be selected from the list below ; the person must have the status “Vorsitz, FGA, GGA” or “FGA, GGA.”
2. Additional Supervisor (GGA): Can be chosen from the list (any status) or may be an external supervisor (see explanation below).

Both supervisors will also serve as referees for your thesis and examiners on your defense examination committee.

The table below lists all the current supervisors and examiners of the faculty (all have the “GGA” status).

Explanation of terms

• Vorsitz: Chair of the Defense Examination Committee. One of the four committee members must have this status (“Vorsitz, FGA, GGA”).
• FGA (Fakultätsgutachter): Faculty supervisor as per your registration.
• GGA (Gutachter): Additional supervisor as per your registration, who may be external.
• GGA EMBL Group or Team Leader: External members not part of the Faculty. If included in your defense committee, the other members must be from the list, with a maximum of two examiners holding “GGA” status.
• External Supervisor/Examiner: Allowed if they hold a “PD” or “Prof.” title and belong to a Faculty of Mathematics, Natural Sciences, or Medicine at a university. EMBL Group or Team Leaders may also act as external supervisors/examiners.
