Study AbroadExchange Programs - Life Science for Health (LSH)
LSH - Life Science for Health is an exchange program between
- Leiden University (LU) and Leiden University Medical Centre, The Netherlands (LUMC) (5 Plätze)
- Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden (KI) (4 Plätze)
- Heidelberg University Faculty of Biosciences
It allows students to study in joint Master programs of the three institutions. Leiden offers the courses in Biopharmaceutical Science, Life Science and Technology and Biomedical Sciences, at Karolinska you can choose courses from Biomedicine.
Application:
At each partner, only a limited amount of places are available.
For the next period please apply using the Erasmus Application sheet. (even if you do not intend to use Erasmus)
Deadline: January, 30
Send the filled in form to the Erasmus coordinator, Andrea Wolk or the Erasmus office.
The nominations are based on:
- study results and grades
- participation in research project(s)
- motivation letter
Programs:
Biomedicine (Karolinska)
The master program biomedicine at KI is strongly focused on research, and a large portion of the program is committed to research practicals. The main topics that are introduced to the students during the first semester are
- Oncology
- Neurology
- Cardiovascular diseases
- Inflammation/immunology.
Spring semester spans from January to May, autumn semester is between September and January.

Biopharmaceutical Science (Leiden)
You are welcome to choose from the lecture series at LU. Combining a course or lecture series with a research project is very well possible. They will offer you assistance in finding a suitable placement at a lab if required.

Life Science and Technology
The program at LU offered the courses:
- Bioinformatics II - Dr Gultyaev - week 36-42 of the year
- Cyttron Lectures - Prof Dr Abrahams - week 36-51
- Gene Expression - Prof Dr Brouwer - week 15-17
- Transcriptome & Proteome Analysis - Prof Dr Brouwer; Prof Dr Noteborn - week 21-23
- Protein Interactions - Dr Ubbink; Dr Siegal - week 4-14 (not confirmed)
- In vivo biomolecular interactions - Dr Kuil; Prof Dr Mathieu Noteborn - week 4-14
Most courses are from the track Functional Genomics.
Biomedical sciences
Master students who consider doing a research project in one of the research laboratories, are welcome throughout the year (also in summer) at LUMC. Generally, student exchange by means of research projects is arranged individually between student and supervisor / department. LUMC would prefer research projects to last around 4 to 6 months. Sometimes, shorter or longer periods are also agreed upon.
In addition, students may be welcome to the Frontiers of Science courses. It should be mentioned, however, that these courses allow limited numbers of students, and the competition is already quite high. Therefore, not all courses mentioned in the prospectus might be accessible for Heidelberg students.
