In the Excellence Strategy, Heidelberg University is committed to its concept of a Comprehensive Research University - a full university with outstanding research strength. On the one hand, the university promotes its individual disciplines and, at the same time, makes great efforts to link competencies from different disciplines and to create new structures and research foci.

In order to interlink its four profile-forming Fields of Focus (FoFs) in the life sciences, the natural sciences, the humanities, and the social and behavioral sciences, Heidelberg University is building new bridges across disciplinary boundaries with two flagship initiatives in the Excellence Strategy. The Faculty of Life Sciences is significantly involved in Field of Focus 1, Molecular Foundations of Life, Health, and Disease.
