Faculty Remembering Peer Bork

The unexpected news of Peer Bork’s passing came as a shock to all of us. In addition to innumerable important functions that Peer fulfilled in the national, as well as international scientific world, he also served as Honorary Professor at our Faculty, the Faculty of Biosciences at Heidelberg University. He was a mentor, colleague and collaborator for scientists at all levels on the campus, and strongly contributed to strengthen Genomics, Molecular Medicine, Bioinformatics and particularly Bioinformatics infrastructure in Heidelberg. In addition to being an exceptional scientist as such, Peer has always supported bioinformatics service initiatives for the greater good, serving the needs of scientists around the world, particularly by providing multiple freely available infrastructures without which many scientists wouldn’t be able to pursue their daily research. He will leave a huge gap in science, one that is not easy to fill – in addition to the wide gap that he leaves as a friendly, considerate and always down-to-earth person for his family, friends and colleagues.
