How membrane lipids shape plant roots

Researchers from the Maizel Lab (Cell and Developmental Biology, COS) have uncovered a new role for membrane lipids in shaping how plant roots grow. The study shows that specific lipids, including PI(4,5)P₂ and phosphatidylserine, help determine where and when new lateral roots form in *Arabidopsis thaliana*. Using live imaging, genetic mutants, and inducible lipid depletion, the team discovered that fine-tuning lipid levels in key root cells controls both the initiation and development of lateral root primordia. These findings add a new layer to our understanding of root system architecture beyond well-known hormonal signals like auxin.
