How Switches Work in Bacteria

14/10/2017 Many bacteria have molecular control elements, via which they can switch on and off genes. These riboswitches also open up new options in the development of antibiotics or for the detection and decomposition of environmental toxins. Prof. Dr. Andres Jäschke of the IPMB together with researchers of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and the Freie Universität Berlin have now used light optical microscopy of single molecules to fundamentally study the way riboswitches work. Procedure

We welcome applications from students who have, or expect to have, completed a relevant Bachelors degree with an above-average grade* by the end of the academic year preceding the desired semester of entry. Degree subjects should either be in Molecular Biotechnology or other Sciences e.g. Biology or Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or Informatics with a focus on some aspect of Biological Sciences.

Applications will be evaluated and top ranked candidates will be invited for an interview. Applicants who qualify for an interview will be personally invited through the academic office of the Molecular Biotechnlogy Master Program. The interview will be held by two experienced lecturers and will focus on the skills required for the Master Program. Interviews will be held in German and English.

It is not possible to get a place without any German language knowledge! For the different kinds of tests please have a look here.
You have to prove f.e. a TestDaF Niveau 4 or a DSH Stufe 2 (67 %) - level C1. You can find more information about German courses at the "Internationales Studienzentrum".
In exceptional cases we will accept German tests with a medium level (B2), f.e. DSH Stufe 1 (57 %) or TestDaF Niveau 3 if you can prove a very good English test. Upon request you can hand in your German language test later, but at the latest at the interviews.

Another requirement is an English test. We accept the following language tests: TOEFL (min. 90 of 120 or ITP 570 of 677), IELTS (min. 6.5), Cambridge Certifikate in Advanced English (CAE) or a final degree certificate (BSc) of a North American or British (UK) university. Please note that a bachelor thesis written in English is not sufficient!

We have to inform you that there are no scholarships at the University of Heidelberg. You have to finance your studies by yourself. Please notice that the costs in Germany are very high, so you should be prepared for monthly costs of 1.000,00 Euro. Furthermore, the tuition fee for non-EU residents is 1.500,00 Euro per semester.

Final degree certificates or appropriately certified copies must be provided before formal admission to the course is granted. Non-EU students should note that this formal admission will also be required before visa can be issued.
